Wireless repeating encryption....

Post by tate »

Hi,
im running the 1.0.15 version on my fonera+.
i need to wirelessly repeat an open wireless network, say (NET1) and broadcast an ecrypted (NET2) to connect my machines.

I got to the point where i can do it only by leaving the NET2 open:
- device as: wireless repeater/bridge
- connect via: client brige
- repeater: enabled
- ssid to join: net1
- encryption: none

i connect to net2 (no password) and i get internet from net1.

if i try to put any encryption, after i apply the changes, there is no more Net2 broadcasted. Nor any other ssid from my fonera. i have to connect via ethernet, than, to make any chenge.
QUESTION:
1- is the encryption for net2, or for accessing the net1 ?
2- how can i get an ecryptet net2 to repeat an open net1 (all wirelessly) ?

Configure Device as: Gateway

Connect via: DHCP wireless or Static IP wireless

Lower down under Wireless:

Choose Client + AP mode

Client is what connects to the open signal

AP is the repeated signal that you can setup encryption.

Hopefully you're not hi-jacking someones internet...
That can get you in serious trouble now - be careful.

Be aware that what DoesItMatter suggests isn't exactly a bridge, it's just wireless routing. It will work but the external subnet will not be able to access hosts in the internal one unless you setup port forwarding.

However, (routed) AP+Client is the only way you're going to get this to work. A repeater implies the network you are repeating is the same as the original one (i.e. same level of encryption).

Hi, i have a situation i can´t solve, please give me a hand. I configure the DIR-300 as wireless routing as explained. However when router is unable to connect wireless to WAN, due signal loss, i´m unable to connect to with by LAN. As the reset button doesn´t work i need to reflash it. What I´m doing wrong?

Thanks.

Here the settings I´m using. If I use the same setting on fonera everything works right.

Thanks for your help.

Hello to you all. After some tests I realized that my problems we´re not on configuration but with DIR-300 performance. I have both routers (fon 2100 & DIR-300) with firmware 1.1.7 and everything works perfectly with fonera but DIR-300 connection is always dropping down. There are some problems with DIR-300 and Gargoyle that I don´t know?

Thanks

How far apart are those 2 routers?

The Fon and the DIR-300 are really low-end home user devices.

Early Atheros chipsets plus their transmission power is really weak.

Maybe if you try throwing some 18 dbi antennas on them, you
can probably get better performance and connectivity.

By default, they both come with 2dbi antennas, which means
anything more than say 20 feet line of sight, or maybe 1 wall
in between is going to be decent performance.

What you need to do to really test them is have them maybe
10-15 feet apart, with NOTHING between them, and then do
performance and connectivity tests.

If it works like that, then your setup (walls, location, signal, etc)
are the problem. The routers probably just can't handle it.

I've done stress tests on my Fonera, and just 1 user, with a bunch
of Linux torrents, completely swamped the router and made it
perform TERRIBLE, even though I was using maybe 1/4 of the
available bandwidth for torrents. These 2 devices just do not have
a whole lot of power to do much other than basic home usage.

Thanks for your help DoesItMatter, the router are 10 mts apart. I use a fontenna. I´ll put them closer, test and post results.

What´s is strange is that all work OK with Fon but not with DIR-300.
