DLink DIR-620 C1 + Gargoyle

Post by Sieger »

Hello @ll!

First of all, thx a lot to Gargoyle (and Open-wrt) devs&contibs for working hard on this great project(s)!

Then, here is some (hi)story of me, my tasks and my h/w:

I had to replace my DIR-412 router recently (summer-time overheat),
so I've got DLink DIR-620 C1 as the replacement.

It's master-purpose for me:
3G router

Despite it has the most recent native fw now, it's really unstable running 3G with my Huawei E1550 USB-3G oldie.
(DIR-412 was really great with this, but as I said it's gone now).

I've changed fw to some modified http://code.google.com/p/wl500g
(lly и theMIROn, mod by Vampik http://vampik.ru).
I.e. this should be some modified WL500G fw.

It works, but I really need "dial on-demand" feature (which will auto-drop/restore 3G connection after it becomes idle).
This feature do present there, but isn't operational, so I still have to look for another alt. fw.

Gargoyle would be a great solution, but I really need help installing it (if it's possible at all).

HW contents of DIR-620 C1 thingie:
CPU: Broadcom BCM5358UB0 (530 MHz)
RAM: EtronTech EM6AB160TSD-5G (64 MB)
Flash: Macronix MX25L6406EM2I-12G (8 MB)

I.e. I believe Gargoyle should fit, but Gargoyle's DL section for Broadcom has a lot of fws, so I don't know which one fits my tasks
(i.e. it has to support my E1550 USB-3G donglie =))

I really hope someone would be able to help/advice/clarify on all this?

USB 3G Modems
:!: USB 3G modem issue (insufficient power). The device does NOT deliver enough power for most USB 3G modems, which can lead to erratic behavior such as droped/failed connections. If a 3G USB modem is to be used, consider other routers with a USB port that delivers enough Amperes. (e.g. Buffalo WZR-HP-AG300H)

Compatible USB 3G modems
e.g. Huawei E1550
any chance this could also be your problem?

ispyisail, thx for the reply!

Thats an interesting point.

Well, the 3G@USB works pretty much OK in "alway-on" mode with Vampik's fw, even though 3G dongle utilizes 3-meter USB extender cable to
connect to the router (which additionally reduces the USB-sourced voltage).

I mostly lack the automatic drop/restore 3G connection capability
(to reduce em-radiation, when 3G is idle/"unused").
