Comes with a Broadcom BCM5352 @ 200MHz and 16MB RAM / 4MB Flash. I could not find the exact model available for this router in the Download section though. Assumed that flashing to a variation of WRT54 would do the trick, as hardware seems to be identical on recent revisions. Googling only resulted in some inconclusive data on the success stories. As mentioned in one of the old posts on this forum, HP feature might not work. However, not even planning to run wireless, so had no use for that either way.
So, first I flashed to: gargoyle_1.5.9-wrt54gs_v4-squashfs.bin
What happened was that the WEB interface was loading extremely slowly and everything was stuttering, however I could use the internet, sort of. Although I had clients disconnecting and completely losing connectivity - the more I tried to access the Web UI. Basically, something was wrong. Upon reboot, the Diag LED (red) lights up for a few seconds (which was normal on stock firmware), but now, after the LED disappears, it lights up again in a short while and lasts for about a minute (during that time the router is unresponsive). Overall, the whole setup is unusable. I time out even by just browsing the Web UI (which is painfully slow), that results in losing the link to the router as well.
Then I decided to go ahead with: gargoyle_1.5.9-wrt54g-squashfs.bin (seeing that later models have identical hardware)
Same result, same symptoms.
I tried the 30/30/30 and erasing NVRAM, to no avail.
I'm stuck now. Anything else I can do? Would really appreciate someones input on this.

Re: WHR-HP-G54
Try Gargoyle 1.3.9
That was the last version that worked well for the WRT54G series
and that type of router
1.3.10 used the broadcom 2.6 series of drivers and has not been stable
for WRT54 users
If 1.3.9 works for you (not sure which version you should try though)
Then stick with that one
This generic one might work for you:
gargoyle_1.3.9-brcm-2.4-squashfs.trx
But again - not sure so you may have to TFTP recover if it does not work
