Gargoyle Router - Setup/Access questions

Post by festol »

Hi all,
Just setting up a router with Gargoyle and having a few problems getting external access to work.

I have had a bit of a search on the net, but not found anything that has helped me so far.
That could be because of my pretty (very) basic understanding of networking stuff.

Basically i have a DG834G modem connecting to the net,
a NDR3700v2 with Gargoyle running
and i want to connect to my NAS and LAPTOP from outside via FTP/VNC/etc

How do i do this?
I have set a static route on the DG834G
and when i forwarded the port of the Gargoyle GUI i was able to connect to it externally
But i am having no luck getting past it.
I have added port forwards on the gargoyle NDR3700v2 to no avail.

I was winging this setup so i suspect i have it configured wrong for my hardware.
Here is the full setup with details i thought important

Any help much appreciated.

You would simplify your life by switching your DG834 to bridge mode. It will also give better performance of your WAN link.

I saw this post http://blog.crox.net/archives/40-Netgea ... PPPoE.html on how to do it.

Then use Gargoyle to do your PPPoE. Also read http://www.gargoyle-router.com/wiki/dok ... &s[]=pppoe

Netgear WNDR3700v2
TP Link 1043ND v3

Thanks for your reply,
i must have browsed over a ton of threads with the answers in them without knowing what to look for.

Bridge mode was the key.

For anyone else who stumbles here via google/search

Changed the DG834g to 'Modem Mode' via this page
-> http://192.168.0.1/setup.cgi?next_file=mode.htm'

Made sure the NAT was off, reboot the modem and set PPPoE in gargoyle and all is working fine.

Ok Couple of other questions if anyone can help.

My previous Filezilla site settings to connect to the NAS seemed to work after i forwarded the port in Gargoyle.

But i had to set the Transfer Mode: Active
or i kept getting a "Server sent passive reply with unroutable address. Using server address instead." and a timeout on getting directory listing.
The login went ok up until that point.
No other settings have changed on the NAS that i am aware of.

Any ideas?

Also re Gargoyle
- Is there any way to log access (successful and attempts) ?
say to syslog on the NAS?

- Is it possible to get Quota to display data as amount rather than %
I looked about but it only seems to show %
