Request: Linux Fonflash for Airlink101 AR430W (DI-300)

Post by Statik »

Hi all,

I have an Airlink101 AR430W ($23 CDN) that I have installed DD-WRT on. Because of the featureset of Gargoyle (whitelist!), I'd like to install that on the router instead.

The procedure in the installation section lists the procedure, using FonFlash, but its a special version, only for windows. I'm using linux.

Can I make an official request for a linux (AMD64) version of FonFlash, as well as a little more detailed installation instructions? Specifically found missing in the instructions is a file list, what files do you need, etc.

Thanks!

I only flash through Windows myself, but check the downloads.

Click on the pull-down menu for FonFlash.

It has the Linux version as well as sources for it.

I believe Eric already compiled a Linux binary a while back.

It should recognize the DIR300 / AR430W as well as Fon's.

That's great!

I hadn't seen him update the thread where he mentioned the AR430W special one that he had compiled for Windows only and linked directly in the thread so I wasn't sure if the new version was now the default one.

Thanks!

Careful... you were right the first time. The source in that part of the download section is still the old version.

However, the source in the trunk/fon-flash directory of the SVN is the latest version. Try checking out the source from the SVN as described on the download page, going into the fon-flash directory and compiling from that.

I know, I know, I need to update the official downloads. I've been meaning to "clean up" fon-flash for a while (for one thing, actually attach a version number to keep track of what version everyone has), and upload new builds, but I just haven't found the time. I just have WAY too much to do right now...

I understand.

I'll have to wait til I get home to download and compile. I'm on a secured network here so I can't install SVN on the computer, nor connect my laptop.

Which files do I need to download for gargoyle anyway? The instructions just say load Gargoyle files, but there are 6 different files in the download section.

Thanks again!

The Airlink AR430W should use these

Under Firmware Download -> Atheros -> 1.0.12

gargoyle_1.0.12-atheros-root.squashfs
gargoyle_1.0.12-atheros-vmlinux.lzma

would be the 2 files you need to flash.

If you know how to access redboot, I would HIGHLY recommend
doing the following command from the redboot prompt:

fis init -f

Then use Fon Flash to flash the above firmware files.

The fis init -f command completely wipes all files and settings
from the flash ram and leaves only the redboot files.

Do I need to do the flash clear if I already have DD-WRT installed?

Do I access redboot the same way as before DD-WRT if I need to?

If DD-WRT is all ready installed just use the special version of "fon flash".

Real easy

Ubuntu 9.04 - the Jaunty Jackalope

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get install subversion
mkdir Gargoyle
cd Gargoyle
svn checkout https://svn.assembla.com/svn/gargoyle-router/trunk
Then, to get Fon-Flash working:

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get install libgtk2.0-dev
sudo apt-get install libpcap0.8-dev
cd trunk
cd fon-flash
make
OK, now for the flashing. :)

Connect AR430W to computer using regular cat5 cable. Leave router off.

Under Firmware Download -> Atheros -> 1.0.12

gargoyle_1.0.12-atheros-root.squashfs
gargoyle_1.0.12-atheros-vmlinux.lzma

Code: Select all

sudo ifconfig eth0 192.168.1.2 up
cd ~/username/Gargoyle/trunk/fon-flash
./fon-flash-gui
I had to enter my password at this point for the network to be detected.
Select the downloaded files in the two drop-downs. I had mine on my desktop so they don't have to be in the same directory.
Click on the Flash now button at the bottom.
Plug in the router and wait. There will be a popup telling you it was successful when its done.

Thanks!

Should get the documentation updated to the new stuff too. Nice-to-know information would have been:

Internet/WAN
Ethernet Port Connects to: WAN/LAN
If this is set to LAN, you have a 5 port switch, but you must connect to the WAN through wireless! For a standard residential setup, it should be set to WAN. Then you can select the DHCP (wired) option in the Connect Via: setting

( I really like this option. Just wish I would have noticed it earlier. Can't glue this hair back in. :) )

It takes the router about 30 seconds to boot instead of the old 10 second boot. During this time you will probably receive an IP through DHCP and then loose connection once, maybe twice. Then it settles down.

Haven't tested WEP/WPA yet, but wireless looks good and strong.

Looking forward to setting up and testing the whitelist/filtering feature soon, and then I'll drop this in the home network to replace the trendnet!

Thanks for the help!
