Router 3Com 3CRWER100-75

Post by aha2940 »

Hi!

I have this router. Yes, it is crap, but I didn't know that when I bought it. It has 16MB RAM, 4MB Flash, and an atheros 2XXX chip inside. However, it won't work no matter what, here's my experience:

- Tried using Gargoyle 1.0.12: it works everything except the wireless connection (the wireless network appears, but it never assigns IP address using the DHCP and even with fixed IP I can't ping anything)
- Tried using latest Gargoyle 1.2: exactly the same as Gargoyle 1.0.12
- Tried using latest Gargoyle 1.4: the web gui is a mess, it pops errors out of nothing, it says it has no IP address on the WAN side, but it has one (it can access Internet) it shows lots of RAM free but if I connect using SSH and run "free" it tells me there is little memory free...to summarize, nothing works. Oh, and the wireless will not work at all.
- Tried using latest Gargoyle 1.5: The router will do nothing. Not even give an IP address when connected via cable. It seems bricked (but it's not :) ).
- Tried using development OpenWRT built on Saturday, may 19th 2012 (yep, that's last week): it works, wireless is up and LAN port work, there is NAT but, no web access (only SSH) and OpenWRT eats all the router's resources so there is no way to install any new packages. Besides, no UPnP, no web GUI...no nothing.

So, the questions now: Am I doing something wrong? Is this router really too crappy to work with Gargoyle? Should I abandon all hope of havin this router resurrected? (original firmware is crap, it crashes frequently)

Thanks for any help and best regards,

German.

Edit: I just checked the router again, it seems it boots with Gargoyle 1.5.4, it just takes a lot of time (like 20 minutes). Also, the wireless interface doesn't work. An ifconfig shows this (which it seems strange, to me:)

Code: Select all

wifi0 Link encap:UNSPEC HWaddr 00-0F-CB-FC-DA-45-00-00-00-00-00-00-00-00-00-00
UP BROADCAST RUNNING MULTICAST MTU:1500 Metric:1
          RX packets:1035 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:221
          TX packets:685 errors:125 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0
          collisions:0 txqueuelen:195
          RX bytes:103549 (101.1 KiB) TX bytes:85818 (83.8 KiB)
          Interrupt:3 Memory:b0000000-b000ffff
Notice the strange MAC address and the UNSPEC in Link encap.

Thanks!!

No clue, it just did. However, since the wireless didn't work on Gargoyle, I compiled openWRT development version and flashed the router with it. It doesn't have web GUI, but everything works. It doesn't take so much time to boot now, so I think that has something to do with the hardware not being properly recognized by the OpenWRT version used by Gargoyle.

Regards.
