Need Simplicity

Post by Mission Specialist »

I came to Gargoyle because I spent 5 days on the DD-WRT site trying to figure out EXACTLY how to load files on my PAIR of Linksys WRT300N V1.1 routers. The mess was so complicated I found it easier to find information by using Google.

I was hopeful that this product would be better. It may be easier to use, but I am not sure exactly WHAT I can load or HOW to load it.

What ever happened to:
For Product XYZ use ABC in that order.
For Product UVW use DEF in that order
Once files are aquired load the with THIS proceedure.

I am under the impression that I need to go to OPEN WRT and download their files first as most references in FAQ indicate Gargoyle is a front end interface to use that program and is not the control firmware itself. Or am I reading this wrong?

I bought the 300N routers as my dad needs to connect two satellite receivers to a B router. The catch is one of those receivers is in an outbuilding 200 feet away. My HP wireless B laptop gets a signal from the DSL/Router combo from that building only if the I stand on my right foot, stick my tongue out and wait for the wind to blow west. That is about 10% of the time on Wednesday and 5% on other days.

I thought the additional range of the N router might get me a consistent signal. I didn't know I could increase the power of B so I spent the extra on the N.

So now I need to use one of the 300 Ns as a bridge, the other as a bridge AND a repeater - as there is no way to increase the output of the B signal coming from my dad's DSL/B router combo. [I am sure the combo would see the 300n's boosted signal but the 300N would never see the combo].

I used to work in computers, so I told my dad this would be a cinch.

I was wrong.

I know what DD-WRT files to use now, and I know WRT can do the job. Not sure if Gargoyle can do the job and not sure what files to download if it can.

A simple, plain-English answer would be appreciated.

Thanks

Steve

While Gargoyle is implemented on top of OpenWrt, you don't need to download OpenWrt first. OpenWrt is included in the firmware files available in the download section. Packages are available for download on top of an existing OpenWrt installation, but you don't need to have OpenWrt installed already.

Second, the WRT300N router has not been validated with Gargoyle. (I do not own this device and I have not heard any reports of anyone trying it and getting it to either work or finding that it does not work.) It should, theoretically work, but I can't guarantee it. However, you won't get Wireless N performance, only G performance. I'm fairly sure this is true of anything other than the default firmware: DD-WRT and OpenWrt only support Wireless G for this device even though it can achieve wireless N performance with the proprietary firmware.

Provided the G configuration provides sufficient signal for you and provided the firmware installs properly, (and if you do please report it so we can have a confirmation that this hardware works), Gargoyle will support this configuration.

I apologize I can't give you a more clear-cut answer than that, but that's the best I can do given that I haven't run a test on your device.
