Upgrade. What happens to custom files?

Hi Guys,
Just a quick question. I am still running 1.5.10 and was thinking of upgrading to the latest version. I have some custom scripts and files that I work on over SSH. If I do an upgrade does every file get deleted and reinstalled or is there just an upgrade over the top? I know I need to use the factory vs sysupgrade files given my current version.
Just trying to work out how painful this is going to be.
Cheers!

Everything will be wiped.
You need to use the sysupgrade version regardless of how far back in versions you are.
Do not preserve settings.
Thanks

Oh great. I misread that. So if I just take screenshots of everything I should be fine...

Don't upgrade 4MB routers, bad things can happen.

I see I omitted to mention I have a TL-WDR4300 so I am assuming it will be fine to upgrade the firmware straight to 1.9
Also I think I may not have understood Lantis' reply above. Are you saying that even if you use the upgrade option everything will be wiped?

/etc/config will be preserved and some other minor files like /usr/data/bwmon or /usr/data/quota
But other than that, pretty much everything will disappear.

Thanks. I can handle that. I think I only have five files so I will copy those off and go from there.

Any chance of getting a custom folder included that is not wiped out so people can safely place things in and not worry about them?

The sysupgrade process is managed by Openwrt, not Gargoyle.
You can yourself add entries to /etc/sysupgrade.conf to preserve individual files and folders. But I think even that file itself is not preserved (and is not allowed to list itself).
