Firmware upgrade TPLink 1043ND v3

Hi, I recently purchased a TPLink 1043ND V3 router specifically for the purpose of flashing with Gargoyle. After reading of the issues flashing a V3 router with gargoyle I read that a good path may be to flash with DD-WRT firmware first and then to Gargoyle. I successfully flashed the router to DD-WRT V3 r30880 and thought that I was well on the way to having gargoyle installed. However no matter what I try I can't flash any other firmware image over the DD-WRT firmware. The DD-WRT Gui Firmware facility allows me to choose the new firmware image, tells me the upgrade has been succesful but then after reboot comes back up with DD-WRT image every time. No failure messages it just says successful but then ignores the new firmware image and returns to DD-WRT. I must be doing something fundamentally wrong but can't figure it out. Any help will be gratefully received.

This guy had the same problem a few days ago and solved it with TFTP
