ok I'll try that, do you have any info on failsafe reset? I can only find Recovery flash in failsafe mode from here: https://wiki.openwrt.org/toh/netgear/wndr3800

Okay, a couple things.
First, the failsafe instructions work pretty well if you read them thru a number of times and write down the pertinent information as it applies to the way you will do it. (There is so much duplication in the poorly written document that it is anything but clear and intuitive.) Remember that once you get that rapid flashing of the power light (also sometimes referred to as the System or Sys light evidently) you can plug into the Netgear directly from your computer and use a terminal window to type in
telnet 192.168.1.1
You should see a display and a prompt. This is where you type in a password, although it will appear you are not typing anything. Don't ask me what password it should be. Maybe passwd. I'm not sure.
Second, I have a similar problem in that I have one router/modem/gateway device from my cellular provider, and I needed to add this router to it. I can plug into each one separately and configure them, but the Netgear WNDR3800 will not see the cellular router or the Internet, even though it is getting DHCP assignment from it. (I will note here that another router with DD-WRT on it cannot see the Internet thru the celllular device either.)
Hope this helps some.
