You might be able to try this:

Looks like the older versions of OpenWRT didn't have connlimit
but maybe the newer versions do?

I'll test on mine when I am home.
I'm running Attitude Adjustment 12.09 final on my DIR-601
I'll see if I can limit connections with the command in the link above

If this works - no need to block P2P - just limit max connections.

Edit - Nope - compiled the latest Barrier Breaker trunk release
Went into Kernel modules and added a bunch of netfilter
kernel mods - but can't find the connlimit module - this may not
work on anything after White Russian.
