Linsys wrt54g not working with Gargoyle 1.5 firmware
Hi,
I have a linksys wrt54g running vers. 1.1 firmware.
I upgraded the firmware to gargoyle 1.5.1 successfully. I initially get into it ok. I set the time zone, but the time is incorrect. I save settings.
The time is still incorrect. I can't find anyway to set the time.
Ok, the real problem. Any time I change the basic settings or any settings, I get the message saving and rebooting. One of two things happen. My router gets hung up where I have to power off/on multiple times or reset..etc..If I am lucky I get back into the firmware. If not, the unit just hangs. When I do get back into setup, the settings are not saved. It goes back to factory defaults.
I thought this firmware was designed for this router. I have installed Tomato firmware, and it work ok.
I also tried to install winrt in the past, and it behaved worse than Gargoyle.
Is there anything I can do to make this work. I really wanted to use this firmware.
Please help.
Regards

The first thing to try is to reset the parameters to the defaults. You can do this through the System->Backup/Restore GUI page.
If that does not work try going back to v1.4.4.
I have loaded 1.5.1 on my WRT54GL without issues so but have not done extensive testing with it.

Re: Linsys wrt54g not working with Gargoyle 1.5 firmware
Hi,
Thanks for the reply.
I did some more testing on this.
The main thing I'm trying to do is use the router as a "wireless bridge".
When use the "Default Gateway" option, everything gets saved ok. But, I cannot seem to get access to the Internet, the LAN works ok. I can ping the routher etc. I see the WLAN light on the router working, and all the statistics/status seems ok.
When I set it to "Wireless Bridge" mode and save the settings, I cannot connect to the router any longer. I have to reset the router back to defaults to connect again.
I have other DDWrt routers I setup, and they have no problem in the "Wireless Bridge" mode. Unless I am missing something on the "Wireless Bridge" setup, that doesn't work at all for me. After I set this up, if I could browse for the SSID, I would think I'm making progress. With DDwrt, as soon as I set it in "Wireless Bridge" mode, my computers find the SSID.
If somebody has this working, I'd appreciate any help in setting this up.

Re: Linsys wrt54g not working with Gargoyle 1.5 firmware
davidp65,
What are you trying to accomplish with the Gargoyle firmware?
If I remember correctly, you cannot use any of the QoS or
monitoring/bandwidth features unless the router is the Primary AP
If its just setup as a bridge or some other non-standard config,
I don't believe those options work correctly, if at all.
You'd be better off sticking with a vanilla Backfire build,
or stick with Tomato / DD-WRT for the router.

WRT54G v1.1 or WRT54GL v1.1? These are different... I'd also recommend using the 1.4.4 firmware on either of these routers.
WRT54GL v1.1
Gargoyle 1.4.7
Gargoyle 1.4.7
Re: Linsys wrt54g not working with Gargoyle 1.5 firmware
Hi,
Yes, I was just trying to use the router as a "Bridge". I have other ddwrt routers in my house. I wanted to add one more. I like the Gargoyle interface/firmware.
So, you are saying that the "Wireless" Bridge option doesn't work?
The "Wireless Bridge" setup seems pretty basic. I entered the bridge IP and the AP/Gateway IP. When I scan for other wireless SSID's, it finds my AP. I select it. I leave Gargoyle as the broadcast SSID. This all seems pretty basic. The problem occurs when I hit "Save settings", then I can't access the router any longer until I reset the device back to defaults.
In response to what router model I have, it is the non "G" version of the wwrt54g. It is wrt54g V1.1. Will firmware version 1.4 work in the wireless bridge mode?
With regard to Tomato firmware. I like it, but it doesn't give me the option to create a separate SSID in "Bridge" mode. That's why I want to use Gargoyle.
Thanks for the response

To have a separate SSID - you'd need to use Client+AP mode
Remember that you WILL lose 1/2 the bandwidth using the
Client + AP mode because it's sending/receiving both ways plus
it has to split that bandwidth over 2 separate SSID's.
Wireless Bridge = Connect router wirelessly to main AP
then use the LAN ports to connect client computers.

Re: Linsys wrt54g not working with Gargoyle 1.5 firmware
Hi,
I did more testing last night and I have some more information.
First, I am running Gargoyle firmware version 1.5.1.
As suggested earlier, I did the following:
1. Reset the router to factory defaults from the Gargoyle interface.
2. Set the connection settings as follows:
DHCP Wireless
AP+Client (This option only shows up after I set the Internet WAN connect option and save settings.) Otherwise, the wireless mode shows client only.
After I saved the settings and the AP + Client showed up, I configured the AP SSID etc. and saved settings again. The router did get an IP Address from my AP. I tried to find the Gargoyle router from my pc to see if it was broadcasting, but it didn't find it. So, I thought a reboot might be required. I did a reboot from the Gargoyle Sysetm option, and the router got set back to defaults again.
So, I re-configured the connection again, and this time I set the Internet/WAN connect via to "Static" with the IP Address was assigned before.
After configuring it for the second time with a static ip, no reboot, I was able to see the Gargoyle and connect to it. I did have limited connectivity, but that is probably another problem.
It appears that when I power off the router or reboot it, everything gets set back to defaults. Has anybody had this problem before? And, Why doesn't "DHCP Wireless" work?
I will do more testing, but so far things seem unstable.
Thanks for the advice.

Re: Linsys wrt54g not working with Gargoyle 1.5 firmware
Try reverting to 1.4.4
You get no benefit using 1.5.1 on the WRT54G
The core of 1.4.4 and 1.5.1 are similar
1.5.1 had extra stuff for 5GHZ and TOR
