Probably not. You're racing the system before it runs out of memory, which from your log happens very quickly. The process of enabling RAM swap will probably be the straw that breaks the camels back.
You would need to reorder the boot processes. This is beyond the scope of this forum to assist you with, if it is even possible.

The reason your system doesn't ever feel like it finished booting:
- ubus is reaped. This process allows inter-process communication for the entire system. Without it many things will fail to work at all
- dnsmasq is reaped. No DHCP leases will be served

usteer crashing is inconsequential

FYI, OpenWrt considers your device unsupportable due to RAM constraint.

Well, enabling swap allowed the router to boot fully. I had to exchange the USB card reader for a better one, but then it came right up. Don't know if it will run stable this way. It shouldn't really need swap, as the amount it's using is roughly the same as what's free in physical memory. I won't use anything demanding either, just WiFi-client to provide wired ethernet in a room that's difficult to get an ethernet line to. Let's see if it continues working. If not, it's been useful for a long time and may retire.

Flashed 1.15.X (Built 20241113-1115 git@b0c923bf) to my Linksys WRT1900ACS last night. Had previously been running 1.13. Everything seems to be working fine, except I can't enable the guest network. It never saves the changes if I try. No issues saving anything else as I rebuilt the rest of my settings.

Edit: After a few hours noticed some other instability - WiFi network would disappear briefly every so often. Router uptime showed continuous operation, but the network wasn't always there. Have reverted to 1.13.

What do you mean never saves the changes? The UI refuses to let you save? It saves but a guest network never comes up?
Spinning indefinitely is not necessarily a symptom of not saving.

It let me click save, then it spun indefinitely and the guest network never came up. Refreshing showed it as still disabled. It never appeared when scanning for networks. I let it spin overnight when I went to sleep to make sure I'd given it enough time.

I tried flashing 1.15 again in the morning. Same behavior, so I went back to 1.13, and had no issue with guest network. Tried to flash 1.15 a third time, same problem. So I'm back to 1.13 for now.

More debugging is needed. Inspection of the config file, of the logs and possibly the browser console.

Your device has a peculiarity with the wifi that all the MAC addresses need to match a certain mask or it won’t start the interface. There’s a possibility that is what is happening.

It could also be as simple as browser cache.

If you want to keep running 1.13 that’s fine, but I would never recommend it personally. But I get that your use case is not currently being met.
I will check on my end if it’s reproducible

Gargoyle 1.15.x BETA - 2024-11-13 - Success on GL.iNet GL-AR150

Post by heilbronn »

Just wanted to let you know about having success with 1.15.X (Built 20241113-0044) on a GL.iNet GL-AR150 (ath79 on LantisProject: https://lantisproject.com/downloads/gar ... rget=ath79):
  • Fresh Installation up from 1.13 went smooth - however, it took like 10 minutes for the router to come up again.
  • Device is configured as a gateway to repeat an existing WiFi network as well as providing a guest network.
  • Wireguard: Not tried yet.
  • Plugins: None tried yet.
Thanks for all the good work going into Gargoyle!

Re: Gargoyle 1.15.x BETA - 2024-11-13 - Based on OpenWrt 23.05 - SMB 2.1 support

Post by ektus »

I've replaced my main router with a new GL.inet Flint. Working great so far, but I've lost access to the attached USB drive from the old Windows 7 clients. Looks like Gargoyle is now using the ksmbd kernel module, which is SMB 3 only. Is there a way to get SMB v2 working again? This is LAN only, so no encryption required.

Not as it currently stands no sorry.
samba36 is still included in the repository and all of the code still supports it. You can compile Gargoyle and swap it out with ksmbd if you’d like to.
