dir-505 downloads mising + overfull firmare

Post by ElvisGargoyle »

Good day,
1. The downloads page for dir-505 1.14 has only 1 download vs the normal 2 = sysupgrade + factory it used to have for other release.

Missing 1.1.4 factory download.

2. 1.14 sysupgrade dir-505 is overfull and cause functional issue trying to set basics like wifi name or vpn and then auto reset to factory default gargoyle on each restart. unstable / unusable.
Can not setup usb stick as extra storage as result.

1.15 is too big, it flashes but then can not start as there is zero space or storage is incorrectly allocated = unusable.

So stuck on last table / last functional firmware or have to use Rooter firmware + wireguard on the dir-505 and I prefer Gargoyle.

Usable, missing wireguard as opvn has config issue / performance issue in 1.13

Any idea if there is a dir-505 1.14 factory firmware ?
Or a 1.14 that has functional storage that is correctly allocated and enough free space to at least save any setting ?

Thanks for the project team, love gargoyle.

1.14 factory failed to produce as it was oversized.
The sysupgrade fits, but as you say must fill all space on boot and dies.

I can’t fix this for you sorry, I’m only developing forwards.

Maybe a new device is on the cards?

The 1.15 beta image should work, although you won't have much flash space to install any extra packages, or maybe enable the bandwidth monitor. As best I can tell there should be about 650-700kB of overlay space available in total, of which about 300kB should be free with a minimal (non-preserved) config i.e. with just password & timezone set. The message in the web UI about insufficient free space isn't always correct, especially if you try and log in as quickly as possible after the router has booted - I've seen this message on a slow device with megabytes of free space. To check the available free space I would allow the device to boot after installation, give it a couple of minutes to stabilise after booting and then login via SSH (user "root", passwd "password") into it without logging in via the web UI; once logged in use the command

Code: Select all

df
to report the free space.

The 1.15 image for this device is setup with just enough tooling to enable USB extroot configuration, though it is unclear whether there is actually enough free space to implement this (which you'd have to do before any other extended configuration). The 1.15 config is also using every trick available to reduce image size and there are no options left except to drop the USB support (which then cuts off any options of additional packages and limiting it to just operating as an AP).

The reason there is no 1.14 image is that 1.14 required OpenSSL which resulted in an image larger than the limit the OpenWrt build system imposes for the device's sysupgrade image (7680kB).

Sadly this device, like many other 8MB flash devices, is reaching the end of the road in terms of being supportable.

I would have thought the same, but OP reports otherwise. Your advice about the GUI message is sound, and I hope that is not all the initial report is based on.
