wrt54g v2

Post by dsalch »

Hi Guys, I am trying to resurrect a very old wrt54G v2 router to use as a repeater. Which firmware is compatible to use? I have it set back to factory firmware from linksys right now.

I would not recommend anything newer than Gargoyle 1.6.

That being said, I would not recommend putting such a device and old firmware into use. There are many exploitable vulnerabilities.

If it is to be used as a hobby/project, sure. But please do not deploy this into production. There are so many cheap devices around that would serve you better.

Yes, I realize that . I'm in a pinch and need a free wifi extender for one remote client
just a bit too far for the ap router . It won't be publically accessible.

I did get it working on 1.4, so I'll try 1.6 and see if it still works

Which image of 1.6 would you suggest for a wrt54g V2 ?

Any tips on setting up a wireless extender with this? I was thinking a client +AP mode with DHCP at the extended end?

I think just the regular wrt54g image is correct but I’m not sure. Caveat emptor.

I would not do client + AP if you can. Just client + Ethernet.

Ok, I'll try it out and see if this dinosaur has some life left in it.

By the way, it was a nightmare finding the original OEM firmware for the wrt54. But it is still floating around.

I wanted to share a quick update for anyone interested.

This project was a major fail :(

I successfully flashed the original firmware from linksys and got the router working. Then I flashed 1.4.7 and it worked as a router. however, when setting it up as any sort of repeater it failed becasue apparently the radio circuits cant handle both transmit and receive ends? Not sure why, but it refused to connect as a repeater or extender.

So, I tried 1.6 firmware. It refused to install through the gui. Tried multiple times, and it just rebooted back into 1.4 every time. So then I tried the tftp upload and managed to get 1.6 installed! but it would no longer boot up beyond a ping.

Did some more research and openwrt says that v2 of wrt54g can only go to the kernel that is inside 1.4 and not 1.6 (it can not run "attitude adjustment", which probably explains this. So.. I ended up pulling the plug on the project and will need to find better HW to use. It was a fun project to try and utilize this dinosaur, but ultimately didnt work.

thanks for your help!
