It will not be a modem error. It's going well in DD-WRT. The problem will be in the pppd daemon and the settings around it.

Using the settings in the 
/etc/ppp/options file, you can set various settings such as debugging, logging, additional commands.
Try playing with the lcp-echo-x commands:
