Help installing on WRT54GL

Post by srs »

Hello,

I am trying to install Gargoyle on my WRT54GL, but can't seem to make it work.

I have a dsl modem in bridge mode, and Gargoyle is set to use PPPoE. I get an ip address, but the dns server points to 192.168.0.1 which is inaccessible and is the address of my dsl modem. I am ping my gateway, but nothing else. Maybe it is some settings left over from the previous firmware (Tomato / DD-WRT)?

I have tried Tomato, dd-wrt and openwrt and they all work fine, so I must be doing something wrong here.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

edit: tried both gargoyle 1.3.7 and 1.2.5

Access your router. Under Connection->Basic make sure the router IP address is 192.168.1.1. It cannot be the same network as your modem which you said is 192.168.0.1.

Then on your PCs you should see an IP address in the 192.168.1.x network and a DNS server of 192.168.1.1.

I use the WRT54GL with DSL modem in bridge mode and Gargoyle 1.3.7. It works great. My modem IP is 10.0.0.1 and my router is 192.168.2.1.

Make sure to set your firewall->connection limits down to 1024 to prevent memory issue on this memory starved router.

If you cannot make the above work please post a screen shot of your router status screen.

hi,

thanks for your help. here is a screenshot of the status screen:

link.

I also cannot ping anything out (eg. 8.8.8.8). It also took 1 minute to get past the initial login screen when you enter a new password, and 3 minutes after entering the connection details. Is that normal, or something with my system?

No it is not normal that it would take more than a few seconds to traverse the screens.

Previously you said the DNS was set to 192.168.0.1 but your screen shot shows 192.168.1.1 so is it working now? Did you try and ping your gateway as listed on the status screen?

How did you install Gargoyle on this router? Did you upload the .trx file from the gargoyle website? You might try a reinstall.

it was just the two screens that took so long (the one where it asks you to input a new password, it said applying settings for about 1 minute, and the it was applying settings for 3 minutes after entering my ppoe settings). It's still not working, but the order of dns servers has changed to:

192.168.1.1
192.168.0.1
68.94.156.1
68.94.157.1

I installed gargoyle from dd-wrt using "gargoyle_1.3.7-wrt54g-squashfs.bin". dd-wrt didn't like the .trx file. I also tried installing openwrt first (which worked, but I didn't like the web interface, and I liked gargoyle's qos), and then gargoyle, but still no luck :(

I can ping the gateway but not anything else, even the dns servers.

Under system there is a "restore default configuration". Give that a try. I am concerned that some old settings from dd-wrt are hanging around. Gargoyle and Openwrt do not use the 192.168.0.x network by default. That is a dd-wrt thing.

The other thing would be to review the modem settings to make sure that it does not have some DNS service active. We do not want it to pretend to be a DNS server. Turn off everything yo can in the modem but "bridge Mode".

Try to change the modem IP to 10.0.0.1. If your bad DNS address also changes then you know that it came from the modem. If not it must be coming from some old setting in the router.

I have tried the restore default configuration to no effect (it doesn't reset the password, correct? Because it didn't when I tried it).

Is there another command I can use to completely wipe out the settings?

Unfortunately, the modem doesn't have any options to change its ip address.

Even with the messed up dns settings, I should still be able to ping stuff with the ip address, right? But I'm not able to, so the real problem may lie elsewhere and the dns issue is only a symptom.

Thanks for your help.

I do not know another way to wipe out settings. Perhaps someone else will jump in with advice on that.

Have you flashed your router with Gargoyle more than once? You might try a second flash if not.

Use 'putty' to get to the command line of your router. From there you can type "dmesg" and "logread" which will printout logs made while your router was booting. Attach these to your next post. Perhaps there will be a clue there.

Finally, how about the box you are "pinging" from. Is it XP, Linux or what? If WIndows type ipconfig from the command line and post the results. For Linux type ifconfig.

Try loading up DD-WRT once again and do a couple resets.

Then download and flash this image from the GUI

gargoyle_1.2.5-wrt54g-squashfs.bin

You should be able to flash back/forth between DD-WRT and
Gargoyle via the web GUI using that BIN file on a WRT54G

I've done it myself quite a few times without issues.

I would NOT use backfire on the WRT54GL - you're probably going
to end up running out of RAM - try 1.2.5 first

When flashing, HOW are you flashing?

Make sure you disconnect anything except the computer you
are using to do the flashing, unplug the other Cat-5 cables.

Once you are sure you have Gargoyle loaded and can access
settings/save settings, then hookup your DSL modem and configure

Once that's working, then plug in any other Cat-5 cables
