How to add more LAN ports?

Post by poepjin »

Hi Forum!

I am very new to this, so please excuse my ignorance.
I am planing to purchase one of the Gargoyle Gigabit Router which is offered on this website. The only problem is, that it only has 4 LAN ports and i need a few more. My question is, should I just buy a second one so I will have 8 LAN ports? Or should I get something else to achieve that? If I buy 2 how are they linked together?

Appreciate your advice.

I think I should get by with 4 more. Can you recommend a particular switch and how would they be linked together?
Thanks

I have one of these in my home

An Ethernet cable from a LAN port on the router to a LAN port on the switch is all that is required to connect them. All devices then plug into the remaining ports.

Hi poepjin

If you are only after about four more ports you could pick up an eight port switch relatively cheaply from many consumer computer outlets. For example the following is available from JB HiFi.

Other consumer outlets would offer similar 8 port switches at similar prices, you can shop around. Make sure you get an eight port Gigabit switch which does 1000mbps.

The one mentioned above also has 'Green' energy saving functions which helps with your power bill. The savings are very small but it all helps.

As Lantis has mentioned you would use up one port of the switch by the connection back to the router, This would leave you with seven ports available. If you use four as you mentioned you would have three spare. Always good to have some spare as I find I inevitably need more as time goes on.

Thanks guys. So the simple solution to my problem is just to add a switch with however many ports I need. Is there a specific requirement on the switch? I saw on the description for both switches it said Non-blocking Architecture. Anything else?

Backplane speed is semi important if you're in a high traffic environment.
For any given number of ports you want the backplane (sometimes called Switching Capacity) to be double that in Gbps. This means that the switch will support every port at full speed bidirecionally.

Notice in the one I linked with 24 ports, it has 48Gbps switching capacity.
