Quotas not working

Post by imacleod »

I have a TP-Link TL-WR741N/ND v1 that was running 1.6.1 firmware and it became evident that the quota allowance was not working as intended: I had a static IP for a laptop on wired and wireless with a quota and another quota for 'all others' with a separate allowance, throttled to 50kbps once exceeded. I've just upgraded the router to 1.8.1 but the quota is still not working: my phone is in the 'all others' and it reports 0.43Mbps down, with the Gargoyle bandwidth graphs showing over 3Mbps being used when it should be on 50k.

Is this a known issue, or am I likely to have made a configuration error?

I also have a newer TL-WR1043ND which also has 1.8.1 which I'm intending to commission, is that setup also likely to have the same issue?

BTW, I did try and search the topic but couldn't see relevant posts and evidently didn't choose my search terms well: "The following words in your search query were ignored because they are too common words: quotas working not."

Have I asked a stupid question?

I have a couple of days home with my parents in which to sort this out most easily, otherwise it's a PITA as the router cannot be accessed directly remotely due to it being on a satellite link...

Here are the quota configs for review/comment. Do you need anything else?

Can you show the bandwidth graph while this problem is presenting itself?
Make plot 1 (blue) the total bandwidth
and plot 2 (red) the bandwidth of the device in particular

I took some traces and they are interesting, but I can't upload them as it says "Sorry, the board attachment quota has been reached."

The graph shows the "others" capped at 50kbps, however my phone records .44Mbps on speedtest.net whilst the graph shows ~20kbps for the same traffic. Is that due to the way that Speedtest measures bandwidth?

It's now clear that I've mistaken the "combined" heading in the csv export for "all others combined", I now see it's for all hosts (sorry, should have been obvious). There were some entries that showed clients that should have been restricted to 200Mb followed by 50kbps downloading 470Mb in one day which I thought was beyond what should have been possible, however a calculator shows me that 270Mb could be downloaded at 50kbps in ~4.5 hours!

So, humble pie is being warmed up and I'm going to drop the exceed rate from 50k to something even more drastic...sorry to raise half baked queries.

It's no problem mate. Glad we got an explanation.
It's all a learning experience. I don't fully understand every aspect of the project yet so I like to try and gather this information when I can.
