Getting a new router and have a few questions...

Post by joereign »

Hello!

I'm planning on getting a Western Digital My Net N600 router and putting Gargoyle onto the router, especially since it seems to be recommended on the OpenWRT website.

Anyways, are there any issues I should be worried about? I heard it's possible to install adblock onto the router, will the N600 be powerful enough? Is there a different router you'd recommend?

Thanks :D

edit: I was looking through the 1.9.x series and UPnP doesn't work with only 4M of flash space, does anyone know how much flash space the N600 have? According to OpenWRT it has 128Mb of Ram, but I can't find anything about flash space anywhere.

It has 16. :D Will last you for years.

Adblock will run fine. Don't think that's a performance intensive task; it does take up some flash memory (to save the adblock filter list) but with your router that won't be an issue.
QoS Tip: Don't complicate your QoS settings. Gargoyle evenly splits available bandwidth between active devices as needed. Just delete all your classification rules and leave only one normal service class and you're done. No more arguing over bandwidth.

Hi there the n600 is a fine router mate. I have the n750 and love it. It's a grate router to mess about with flashing as you cannot brick it because of the built in reflash mode in the Uboot. Basically if you flash somthing and it messes up you just hold down the reset button power up and log in to 192.168.1.1 and it lets you upload any firmware you like.

It will handle adblocking just fine, the CPU and ram in the WD routers is quite fast. I don't know why they stopped making routers as they did a good job with the mynet range.

If you find one cheep then get the n750 for it's gig switsh.
