A Commercial Edition?

Post by Gargoyle87 »

We all know that Gargoyle is a free open-source software, and Gargoyle developers are consuming time and effort in the development.

DD-WRT have a commercial edition, so why not Gargoyle?

It will be a great idea if there was a Gargoyle Advance Edition that have more features (like VLANs, multiple SSIDs, captive portal...), and sold at a reasonable price (like 20-30 USD).

That kind of defeats erics purpose with gargoyle, but if you want to commercially sell routers with gargoyle pre installed, you do need to pay licensing fees.

I do not want to sell anything!

What I meant that Eric is spending time and effort on development... which I think that they are limited resources for him (I do not think that Gargoyle development is a full time job ;)).

Gargoyle development is slow... getting a revenue from the project improves the development rate and quality... the idea of selling routers is good... but selling a commercial advanced edition will be great!

So why not developing an advanced edition (maybe by giving more time and effort), and then selling it... and the normal edition remains free...

well he cant exactly do that under the gpl or he would need to add a new license like bsd to his code.

Yea, since OpenWRT is open-source, and Gargoyle is just
the front-end, it can't just be sold as is.

Besides all that, you have to get tons of people interested!

For Eric to do this full time, even if he was just selling
pre-loaded routers, would take a ton of interest and marketing
to make money to support himself.

Starting off a business here, especially in this economy, is rough!

Trust me, I know!

2x Buffalo WZR-HP-G300NH V1 A0D0 = Gargoyle 1.9.x / LEDE 17.01.x
2x Engenius - ESR900 Stock 1.4.0 / OpenWRT Trunk 49400

I think that captive portal should have a high priority, because all users will make use of captive portal!

(VLANs, multiple SSID... are not important for most users...)
