Yes when there is a wired connection between the modem LAN port and Gargoyle WAN port. Not in your repeater setup
Can you help someone else get Gargoyle up and running?

Thank you for clearing this up. Do you have any recommendation for my setup and settings with Gargoyle as a wifi repeater? Or did I do it right? The attached screenshots in my previous post show what I've done. Sorry for asking but I am a bit new to the Gargoyle firmware.
Thanks :)

I have not used Gargoyle in repeater mode as you are. However, your setup seems about right except for one detail which is a little weird.

You have setup the TD-W9980 as a DHCP server for you LAN and for it to assign IP's automatically from the range 192.168.1.100 thru 192.168.1.245. Great.

However, you have set your Gargoyle router with a Static IP address of 192.168.1.190 which is within the range of IP addresses reserved for automatic DHCP assignment. This will work (most of the time) but it is more correct to choose a Static IP address somewhere in the range 192.168.1.2 thu 192.168.1.99

A subnet is a different thing to a DHCP range. (read up on wiki)

I am not sure what is causing these diconnections

Thank you so much for the heads up and the information.
I thought that the repeater had to be inside the range of the DHCP server (main router) so it could take an IP address from it. By what you are suggesting, it will work even if it is outside that. Great, I'll give it a try.

I had some more problems and disconnections with the 1.6 firmware. Most problems were with IPhones not getting an IP. Upgraded to 1.8 version and until now everything seems stable. I also tried dd-wrt but the complexity to set it up as a wireless bridge repeater was too much. Nothing compared with Gargoyle's easy set up. I am now connected via WDS to the 9980 and all devices get IP and fast connection at last.
Way to go Gargoyle modders. We owe you so much.
