Need Help blocking website

Post by SCL677 »

Hello... kinda new to this and needed some help on blocking websites.
I follow the guide but instead of blocking a particular site, it blocks all sites and prevented me from going online.

I have a tp-link wdr3600 running on Gargoyle v.1.58.

To block the website I did the following:
1. Firewall >> Restriction
2. Under rule description I inputted a name, for ex. Amazon.
3. Under rules apply, I selected "only the following host"
4. uncheck, "all network access"
5. Under website url, I selected block only.
6. Enter the url, for ex. " updates.amazon.com "
7. Click on Add new rule and save changes.

Can't figure this out, any help is appreciated.

Regards,
Andy

this worked perfectly (for google obviously).

can you show us a screenshot of your settings instead of a recount of what you *think* your settings might be?
I don't mean that as an insult, we just need to double check it.

Further, you are using a very old version of Gargoyle. I would suggest you upgrade to 1.8.0

Thanks for the quick reply.... where did you pull that IP address from in your screen shot.

I've attach a screen shot of my setting but it appears it may not have been loaded.

Try uploading them to a free hosting service like Imgur.
You can then link them with the IMG tags, or just paste the links here and I'll take a look.

That IP address is the address assigned in my DHCP settings (Connection -> DHCP) for the computer I wished to apply the block to.

Btw... under DHCP I enter the ip address as 192.168.1.100

It still didn't work.

Under Status->Connected Hosts, can you verify that the device in question actually has been assigned the 192.168.1.100 address?

I don't see a problem with your settings (except that you haven't added the rule and then hit save changes yet, but i assume you did that).

i'm having trouble testing your specific example of "softwareupdates.amazon.com". When i try to go to that website even without a restriction in place it refuses the connection.

It might be helpful to use my example of "images.google.com" to test that the actual functionality works.

Tested your sample, "images.google.com" and it didn't work.
Maybe I should revert back to the stock firmware of my router.

Thanks for helping.

Can you please show me a screenshot of you trying the images.google.com example?
Specifically i am looking for the settings being applied by hitting save changes, and then recall the settings via "edit" and show me the screen that comes up.

Please note that it might take 2-3 minutes for the blocking to take effect as the firewall needs to restart when you apply a rule.

You also didn't confirm whether the device actually has the .100 address or not? (however by now the DHCP lease will have expired and it probably does have it.)
