BT TV and Multicast/IGMP

Post by ThePhoenix »

Hi

I have a question regarding the ability to use my TP-Link TL-WR841N/ND v8, installed with Gargoyle 1.8.0 in place of a BT Hub 5. Specifically if it is possible to stream BT sport to my BT Vision box. With my current configuration everything works barring the BT Sport option.

I have done a lot of Googling and find many references to the same three things (possibly all the same thing). Apparently to use the BT Vision services fully, the router must work with: Multicast, IGMP Proxy and IGMP snooping.

I am not networking expert and am struggling to determine what these are. Are they the same thing? Are they software functions or hardware devices? Or software the requires specific hardware? Some suggestions I have seen elude to IGMP Proxy being some kind of bridging between the LAN ports and the WiFi radio. (I am not using a WiFi connection, BTW). I’m sorry, I just am not getting it.

So my question in a nutshell is this: would it be possible to use the full functionality of my BT TV box using this router and the firmware I have installed.

As I have said previously I am no expert, but I am happy to make simple script changes via ssh/vi if that might get me what I am after.

Any assistance/advice gratefully received.

Thank you

When i had a YouView box i had to port forward 1024 and 8081 TCP to the Youview box. IGMP Proxy cant remember from the top of my head but i know is a microsoft DHCP route and enabled snooping but was on an ASUS router. You would need a router with a 8Mb flash or more, 4MB flash might not do the job.

igmpproxy_0.1-8_ar71xx.ipk << is here and can be installed via gargoyle (System > Plugins) Configuring? No idea but can see on the Openwrt Wiki http://wiki.openwrt.org/doc/howto/udp_multicast
