1.6.2/1.71/x Settings not holding on power off

Post by tals »

Tested on a Netgear 3700 v2

Firmwares 1.6.2 and 1.71 (and 1.7x)
If you update to these firmwares (not preserving settings), enter the settings - test internet is working and then power off the router the router loses its settings

If you are on 1.6.0/1.61 or 1.7.0 and update to the above firmwares with preserve settings then settings you amend will not get this issue so this is the only way I found I can be on 1.71/x and still keep the settings if I have a power outage

I tried using save setting on a working 1.71 (ie one that had been gone to using preserve) and then reflashing to the 1.71 and restore and this didn't work.

Additional note I am on a ppoe - wired if that has an affect.
I also reverted to Netgear firmware to reset router before starting the test

What happens if you don't use ppoe (just for testing this problem)

I've actuality just put 1.7.1.x into a live network and no problems so far. (not ppoe)

Hi Ispy

Steps I did:

Update to Firmware 1.7.1 - not preserve settings
Enter ppoe - wired
Login and password
(previously I had entered wireless etc but this is not necessary)
Save Settings

Check internet working.
Power off router - leave for 10 seconds - power on router and wait for green light on router to go steady

Then connecting to 192.168.1.1 - my password doesn't work have to enter password, get the password reset screen (with region)

No settings held on router

Are you testing this on a 3700 v2 router?

I can do the non ppoe if it will help - though it will lose my settings to test that :( If your router is already clear you could just try entering a login and password on ppoe - it won't connect but you can see if that holds - would be strange if it is ppoe causing it. As I said I will do it if that isn't possible for you - just loathe to lose the settings, been working on this for the last 4 hours :(

I've had no settings loss on wndr3800 with 1.6.2, 1.7.0, 1.7.1 or any of the 1.7.X with PPPoE

Hi Lantis, just to confirm you went to 1.62 or 1.71 with the preserve settings unticked ie you had to reenter the settings from scratch and afterwards if you turned off the router the settings were retained?

If so then we need someone else with a 3700 v2 to see if they get the issue

Correct.

Usually when I hear this kind of problem I think insufficient memory but I doubt that is the case here.

Tbh when I started this exercise I thought that was what I was looking at and that could still be the case but this wasn't a one off. I went to those builds multiple times and at the end I even got to the scenario that worked eg 1.70 to 1.71 then flashed clean 1.71 to lose (just to prove the scenario) them flashed 1.70 to 1.71 then changed settings, powered off, then did even more settings like qos etc and powered off and it was fine.

So if it is hardware it's a strange issue as 1.60/1.61 and 1.70 all work fine - unless we have a dodgy bit of memory that is being missed by those 3 but not by the others without preserve settings.

Any gurus know of the Linux command to test the flash memory?
