PPPoE Dropout when on VPN

Post by vec »

Strange issue on Netgear WNDR8300 Gargoyle 1.6.2 (was also happening on 1.5.9). The router is bridged to a ADSL modem (tried two different modems same issue).

When I connect a VPN (any provider openvpn) via their VPN tool or the openvpn client on a device the PPPoE connection disonnects and reconnects when the VPN is put under heavy load. It always happens within 6-15 minutes.

Heavy load without/outside a VPN causes no issues.

If I setup my modem as a router and remove gargoyle router this issue does not occur.

NOTE I am not connecting a VPN in gargoyle only on the client windows machines.

This is the message gargoyle give me when the issue happens:

Apr 18 13:26:30 Router daemon.info pppd[2787]: No response to 3 echo-requests
Apr 18 13:26:30 Router daemon.notice pppd[2787]: Serial link appears to be disconnected.
Apr 18 13:26:30 Router daemon.info pppd[2787]: Connect time 14.4 minutes.

If I set the failed pings before reconnect in gargoyle to a high number like 20 this is the error instead:

Apr 18 13:35:18 Router daemon.info pppd[19705]: LCP terminated by peer
Apr 18 13:35:18 Router daemon.info pppd[19705]: Connect time 6.0 minutes.

About 30 seconds after the disconnect the PPPoE is back up.

Would love your help in solving this issue. :P

Another interesting point is it only happens when I put a VPN under load if I throttle downloads to half the total bandwidth PPPoE stays connected. The PPPoE also drops if I use a PPTP VPN under load.

Same if I use PPPT though. Also I am talking the PPPoE drops if I download thru VPN more than 1MB/sec. The fastest I can go is about 1.8MB/sec. If I throttle the downloads inside the vpn to say 800KB/sec it stays connected. Will 1.7.1 fix this or...?
