block domain name

Post by gride2639 »

Hi... I've been searching everywhere and can't find a way to block a domain name, for example amazon.

I'm running Gargoyle v.1.5.8. I click on firewall tab and then restriction.
Under rule description, I type in http://firs-ta-g7g.amazon.com

For rules applies to, I selected, "only the following host"
and beneath that it asked to specify an IP, IP range or Mac address.

This is where I get stuck, I don't have the IP address to, http://firs-ta-g7g.amazon.com

where do I go from here?

Thanks in advance.

You misunderstand, the IP you are specifying is the IP on your local network that you want the rule to apply to.
Either enter the IP of the device on your network or the MAC address associated with it.

i have provided an example.

CAUTION: In my example i have done a pretty broad rule for ANY url that contains the word "amazon". Experiment with what works for you.

Thanks for the prompt reply and your assistance.

I'm trying to install a new device and prevent itself from updating however I do not have the mac address of the Ip address of that device.

would it be suffice if i just just look up my IP address, enter it and under domain name, I type in http://firs-ta-g7g.amazon.com. Will this block it?

Sorry for the newbie question.

Yes that will be fine. Note that if the IP address changes (which it has a chance to every 12 hours) your rule will stop working.

Gargoyle will allow you to set this IP to static under the DHCP page.
Once the device is on the network, if you know it's IP you can find its Mac address under the "connected hosts" page on the router.
