Wrt54gs v4 Firware Upgrade Settings hang

After installing the latest firmware 1.6 into my wrt54gs v4 I can access the GUI but I can't see the status of the router (all fields blank) and some settings in the router won't save ie connection settings. When I tried changing firmware to another lesser version or Tomato, DD=wrt mini or anything else the upgrade process hangs forever. How can I fix this I have tried tftp and all kinds of resets before and after? Is the firmware too big. The support website says that it should work but could be slow. I have tried leaving the update process running for hours to no avail. The gui always comes back up after a reset but nothing has changed in the firmware or function of the router. Any ideas about how to reverse and/or fix this ?

router is too old

Lower end devices with only 16 MiB RAM will easily run out of Memory, for bcm47xx based devices is Backfire with brcm-2.4 recommended

Is there a way to back out to a different firmware?
