Help with gaming QOS setup

Post by slapshot30 »

Hey guys, I'm setting up my QoS right now and I just want to make sure that I'm doing things correctly. I've spent a few days reading other posts on the forums about QoS, as well as reading the guide about QoS in the documentation section of the site. Setting up the service classes seems pretty straightforward, but setting up the classification rules seems a bit more complex.

Basically what I want is my gaming getting a minimum slice of the bandwidth, while any other device gets the rest. Here is what I have so far.

Gaming class:

Default class:

Now for the classification rules. The only ones I think I need to set up are for my gaming devices, as it says all other devices that don't meet the criteria will be put in my default class. For example, I followed the guide by going into connection>DHCP and gave my PS4 a static IP address. Does the rest of the information in this form need to be filled out besides the IP address of the PS4 in the destination IP section?

The classes and service rules from the QoS downloading section seem identical to that of the uploading section. The only difference I know I need to do is instead of putting the PS4 IP address in the destination section, I need to put it in the source IP section for uploading. In terms of the active congestion control, can I just check the box to enable it and roll with that (is there a need to fill out the "use non-standard ping target" or "manually control ping targets")? Thanks for the help.

I do not see anything wrong with your setup as long as 80kbps is enough to support your game. For XBOX live I am using 120kbps.

As far at the ping parameters go lets try the defaults and see how it goes. What ping target is it using and what ping time limit was computed? What are your download/upload speeds?

Thanks for the suggestion on the download speed. What minimum upload speed do you have for gaming if I may ask? The best speeds I've gotten from speedtest.net are as follows: Download 32.54 mbps, Upload 6.81 mbps, Ping 10 ms. By ping target do you mean the IP address speedtest is using? If so, it says 174.71.68.154. Is there a better ping target I should be using, if so what would that be? My last question is with regards to the minimum percent bandwidth field. I am more concerned about a set minimum mbps I want for gaming, and not necessarily minimum percent of the bandwidth it gets. What will it be more sensitive to, the minimum mbps or minimum percent bandwidth?

I use the same speed both ways but since you told me nothing about what your game requires its hard to say that is what you need.

There is an automatic ping target and ping time generated. You only told me the ping target which looks fine. Just leave it.

MinBW takes priority over all other settings as discussing in the QoS documentation on this site.

It already says kbits/sec, entering 80000 is equal to 80 Mbits/sec, right???
