windows 7 odd ethernet issue

Hey,

So, I am dual booting Ubuntu and windows 7. Ubuntu works fine, but when I logged into a fresh install of 7, my ethernet adapter won't work.

I'm not 100% sure if it's a router issue, but it seems like it since my roommate had a similar problem on XP. Wireless works fine, since it's a different card. I have a static IP assigned to the ethernet adapter's mac.

For some reason it starts giving me an ip in the 196.XXX.XX.XXX range, even though it should be in 192.XXX>XXX.XXX. The subnet is also 255.255.0.0 instead of 255.255.255.0. I really don't know what's going on, and i keep getting the "limited or no connectivity" message, and even when I ipconfig/release, that random IP still shows.

Any ideas what I can do? I'm rather stumped at the moment. Does it have to do with two different OS's using the same IP, even though it's the same mac address/adapter?

So, I suppose the odd 169.254.247.243 ip means that it couldn't get an ip address from the router's DHCP server?

Yeah, anytime you get the 169.xxx range of IP's from within
Windows, that's usually telling you that the connection can't get
an IP address from a DHCP server, so Windows assigns one in its
default range.

Not sure why it works in Ubuntu and not in Windows 7 though.

What Network card and what drivers are you using?

Hey, thanks for the reply.

The motherboard is a P5NSLI, and I think that it uses a Marvell 88E8001 PCI Gb LAN controller. I'm not too sure of the exact drivers (not at home).

Could this be a router issue? Or just an issue with the drivers on windows 7? My roommate has had something similar happen to him on our network using windows XP, but setting a static IP for him solved the problem.


Edit: I just reinstalled the latest drivers for windows 7 and it still gives me the same problem. I've even tried disabling IPv6, but no luck. If I manually set a static IP in windows, it still can't seem to ping the router.

I would verify the driver, then definitely assign a static IP,
gateway, dns, etc, and make sure any firewall and/or virus protection/firewall is set to disabled.

Then see if you have internet access.

If you can, then it has to be some setting somewhere in Windows 7
or somewhere in one of the firewalls that is causing no internet.

I've updated to the latest driver. Assigning a static IP does not seem to make any difference. Windows firewall and UAC are both off. No internet access. It's from a clean install of 7.

Normally I would agree with you that it probably isn't the router, but I've seen something similar on my roommate's XP computer as well, where he gets an IP very similar to this one, and nothing works. For him, assigning a static IP fixes the problem, but not for me. That's what is leading me to believe that it's something to do with my router, but not 100% sure.

What's the router?

Is there any chance you can re-flash the original firmware?

That's the easiest test, if you re-flash original firmware and it
works, then it could be a bug between your router and the
Gargoyle/OpenWRT firmware.

If it does the same thing with factory firmware, then yes, it
could definitely be a hardware issue in the switch part of the
router - and hopefully you can RMA it.

Jump in and Re-Flash!

I can't even count the # of times I've re-flashed my Fonera trying
to help with the AP+Client mode testing and flashing all the
different builds of Gargoyle + DD-WRT on it.

If I had to guess, at least 100 flashes have been performed on
my Fonera 2201+ and its still going strong!

Are you sure that you don't have any exclamation sign over marwel controller in device manager?
If yes try and force 100 full duplex tx speed, also have unchecked ipv6 crap.
Then disable/enable network adapter.
