WRT54GL + WRE54G not working

Post by movak »

Hello

I've just installed Gargoyle 1.0.14 on my WRT54GL and it's working very nice. However, I can't get my WRE54G v3 range expander to work with Gargoyle. The WRE link led is on and the expander also appears on the "Connected Wireless Hosts" list. But I can't even ping the WRE from the WRT. So I wonder if there is anything I can do to make it work or is it an incompatibility issue?

cheers

Did the WRE54G work before you flashed Gargoyle?
I mean, did it work with the WRT54GL linksys firmware?

If so, have you changed the IP of the WRE54G?

Usually the IP range that Gargoyle uses is 192.168.1.1

Were you using that range or a different range?

If you were using a different range you can either input that
range into the Gargoyle settings or you can manually set your
IP address on a computer, and hookup directly to the WRE54G
and change the IP/subnet/gateway settings on it.

EDIT: I read there's an auto-setup button.
The auto-setup button usually only works with Linksys firmware.
When you put 3rd party firmware on, the auto-setup
may NOT work properly, manual setup is usually required.

Yup

No, as I changed the IP of the WRT to the old address.

Here's my current config:

WRT

IP: 10.0.0.1
Net: 255.255.255.0
SSID: wlan
Channel: 2
Mode: AP+WDS

WRE

IP: 10.0.0.40
Net: 255.255.255.0
GW: 10.0.0.1
SSID: wlan (not transmitted)
Channel: 2

Both have no WEP/WPA activated.

Btw, I've noticed that the WRE-mac is still listed in the connected hosts section although I turned it off 5 hours ago. Very strange..

According to that, the WRE54G's require Linksys firmware?

If that is the case, you might be out of luck using it.

There's probably some unsupported way to get it to work, but
I guess you have to be able to connect to it in order to be able
to change any configuration on the WR54G.

1st thing I would try is do a hardware reset on the WRE54G
Next, change the Gargoyle settings to the 192.168.1.1 range
Finally, disable all wireless security for setup.

Then see if you can access the WRE54G

Since its using 3rd party firmware, you might only be able to
connect with no encryption or WEP encryption.

The wireless access to the WRE is actually no problem. I could also configure it via its ethernet port. But that doesn't help much as the settings should be correct. I also rebootet the WRT/WRE several times. But that had no effect. So I think the problem is that the Linksys firmware just doesn't like to work with Gargoyle. However, I actually was slightly dissatisfied with the repeater solution anyway. So I think I'll just sell the WRE and buy a better (directional) antenna for my wireless card.. Nevertheless, thanks for your support!
