I see the WZR-HP-G300NH is supported, but WZR-HP-AG300H is not listed.
It appears to have a Atheros AR7161 rev 2 (0xaa) CPU
Any ideas if this would work?

Even a different revision of the same model can mean a different hardware...

I'm using 1.5.9 right now, not sure if mine is the same revision as yours but I got this issue

Technically, the router is forced to use build-in settings that including regulatory and txpower EEprom limit .
