Maximum download - Asus WL-500-gP

Post by olo »

Hi,
I just got a new cable modem connection from my ISP (30/2 Mb/s) and my download on Asus WL-500-gP V2 @Gargoyle is like 23.7 Mb/s. Is it a limitation of the hardware or Gargoyle?

It's not the ISP issue because when connecting my PC directly to the modem I get 29.9 Mb/s, so it's working fine.
Best regards,
Olo

Yep - limitation of the router.

You really need to get a router with 400+MHZ cpu to take advantage
of the higher broadband speeds.

Reason is that all the connections tax the router, as well as all the
other features of the firmware taking cpu as well.

WRT54's & these older Asus routers were good in their day but they
are just too slow now to keep up with the fast broadband speeds.

Thank you for your reply. I bought Asus because it was quite popular while reading OperWrt forums. I understand it’s outdated nowadays.

I was thinking about TP-Link TL-WR1043ND but I was daunted by Warnings/Gotchas and reported problems regarding recent firmware. On its site there’s a link to Buffalo WZR-HP-AG300H – should I pick this one or is there a better choice?

I’m looking for a 1Gb/s LAN ports router with 100% working USB port on Gargoyle and that will support throughput high as 120 Mb/s (just for future). What router would you recommend as a hassle free and future-proof for Gargoyle?
