Setting time restrictions

Post by dirtmover »

I'm considering replacing Tomato with Gargoyle for its monitoring and quota features. I also wish to set up time restrictions for the kids like I currently have with Tomato. Tomato allows time restrictions to apply to internet access only while still permitting LAN access which allows them to continue to use devices on our network such as printers, NAS etc. Does Gargoyle allow this flexibility?

Gargoyle allows you to specify times of access and also degree of access.

You can disable internet access but you cannot disable lan access so for most purposes that probably does what you want.

In terms of degree of access you can disable all web pages bar say wiki/school etc, the downside of this is when you do this aspects such as msn reopen :( However when you specify full access that stops internet access whilst keeping the lan working.

You also do have an option to record web access and search access which for the children I find quite useful. Also if you set up QOS for the children, I have a class for each child's devices then I can see at a glance whether they are accessing the internet or not :)

The QOS Active Congestion Control is very good.

Thanks for the reply. It sounds like it's doing exactly what I required so I installed it this morning. Hopefully it'll also resolve the pesky random reboots I've been experiencing with Tomato.
