Netgear WNR612v2 & On Networks N150R

Post by Volaris »

The following might also apply to the Netgear WNR2000v3 - I've read the only difference is that it has 4 ethernet ports.

Just providing my feedback on these identical routers. OpenWRT recently started supporting them last year; I noticed Gargoyle has firmwares for them on the download page since 1.7.0.

NewEgg had them for $9.99 with free shipping, so I bought one to give it a try. Using the TFTP method, I could not get it to install the Gargoyle factory image, however it did install factory/stock (not Gargoyle) WNR612v2 image without any problems. I also tried various attempts to install Gargoyle's N150R and WNR612v2 factory images from either web or TFTP (1.7 and 1.7.1) without any success.

So I went to OpenWRT's download site and installed the OpenWRT N150R factory image. Flashed perfectly using TFTP. Problem: Only less than 200Kb of free space - not even enough to install QoS (didn't have uPnP either I believe?). I then tried "upgrading" to Gargoyle using the N150R upgrade file - success! But after setting everything up, I noticed it lost all settings if restarted. Guessing out of space due to 4Mb flash - same symptoms the D-Link dir-601 a1 gave me with 1.5.11.

So basically, yes they're now on the download list, but don't bother. If you have different/better experience with this router, please post! Hope this helps out someone.

Other Gargoyle experiences for other routers:

D-Link Dir 601 a1: For whatever reason, the download files for this router were removed from the download list on Gargoyle. Versions 1.5.10 and below work great on this router. It's version 1.5.11 and after where it ran out of space. Anywho, the files are still on the server, thankfully. Here are the direct links for 1.5.10:
Factory: https://www.gargoyle-router.com/downloa ... actory.bin
Upgrade: https://www.gargoyle-router.com/downloa ... pgrade.bin

Linksys WRT400N: As of 1.7, the upgrade file for this router is huge (7Mb). Was previously below 4Mb. The Gargoyle factory file is normal (4Mb). OpenWRT files are normal (3.1Mb). Seems like the Gargoyle upgrade file has stuff it doesn't need (such as USB - this router doesn't have USB).
QoS Tip: Don't complicate your QoS settings. Gargoyle evenly splits available bandwidth between active devices as needed. Just delete all your classification rules and leave only one normal service class and you're done. No more arguing over bandwidth.

4mb routers are EOL in respect to gargoyle

8mb routers are on the edge

16mb are preferred
