Reboot loop / Timezone BW usage bug

Post by Magnets »

I've been running Gargoyle on a WR841n for a few months now and it's been really fantastic.

Today the router started reboot looping out of the blue, but would stay up for around 20-30 seconds. I tried the web UI factory/default reset a few times and it didn't seem to do anything.

Checking logread, the router mentioned something about adjusting timezones (we recently entered BST) just before crashing each time.
ipt_bandwidth: timezone shift of 60 minutes detected, adjusting
I found this thread that mentioned there was a bug with TZ changes on the BW monitor, so I deleted the usage data (BW usage/Delete data) and it seems to have fixed it.

1.5.11 on wr841n v8

I am experiencing reboot loop on my TL-WR1043ND v1 router I recently setup too. I am using Gargoyle 1.6.2 on it.

I see a similar message like yours just before the router reboots.

Code: Select all

[ 142.070000] ipt_bandwidth: timezone shift of 780 minutes detected, adjusting
[ 142.080000] old minutes west=0, new minutes west=-780
I don't think my problem is related to daylight saving. I had reset the router yesterday because it was having reboot loop after working fine for 2 weeks, configured to reboot daily. However, it go haywire on the next day...

In any case, the router is configured to NZ time zone and daylight saving was kicked in recently. Though the router reset I had described earlier is done after daylight saving... so daylight saving is probably not the cause.

If this router is not connected internet or any devices by WIFI, it seems to be running fine without reboot. But it will reboot after I press the backup configuration button and the error above will appear just before rebooting. In other words, the router will reboot BEFORE the compressed backup file is downloaded to the computer.
Note: this reboot behaviour cannot be reproduced after a reset by pressing the backup configuration button.

Is your router still working fine after you had reset/deleted the usage data? or did the same problem emerge again?

I am looking for a solution or way to figure out what is wrong with this router...

PM me if you need to buy Gargoyle router in Australia/NZ, willing to pay me to help you on your Gargoyle configurations or build custom configured ROM with pre-installed app or try to fix your bricked router. Yes, I am looking for job/work.

I've been deleting BW usage data every few months and it's been working fine.

mm... this is not really a fix though.

I have a custom build rt305x router running Gargoyle 1.5.9 which has been working for over a year in Australia without ever needing to do reset or delete BW data. Australia has daylight saving too...

Update: it doesn't make any sense.. I left the problematic router running not connected to internet or any devices for a day. Without making any actual changes, the router didn't keep rebooting today when I press the backup button... even after it is connected to internet and used normally.

I just had this in my TL-WR1043ND. Had to factory reset it.

I registered here just to post to this thread. I have a TPLink WR941ND with gargoyle 1.8.0 and it started rebooting out of nowhere. It rebooted every minute. After I was able to connect to wifi I had literally only a few seconds to ssh and issue a logread. What I could find was this:

Code: Select all

Wed Nov 11 23:08:27 2015 kern.warn kernel: [ 67.920000] ipt_bandwidth: timezone shift of 120 minutes detected, adjusting
Wed Nov 11 23:08:27 2015 kern.warn kernel: [ 67.930000] old minutes west=0, new minutes west=120

Wed Nov 11 23:08:28 2015 kern.warn kernel: [ 69.070000] ipt_bandwidth: error,"bdist4-upload-day-31" is a duplicate id
Wed Nov 11 23:08:28 2015 kern.warn kernel: [ 69.340000] ipt_bandwidth: error,"bdist5-download-month-12" is a duplicate id

Well, I have custom NTP servers configured and the router time was out by 1 hour since there is no DST where I live. To solve this issue, I did as Magnets suggested and deleted the bandwith data (It was hard since the router was restarting all the time).

This problem should be resolved in version 1.8.1

For future reference if it were to happen again, the easiest way to fix it to trigger a failsafe mode on the router, then telnet in and remove the offending files in /usr/data/bwmon. Then issuing a reboot command will bring the router back to a functional state.

Cheers.

This or at least something similar can still occur on 1.8.1.

We had a 5 day Internet outage and while everything appeared ok when the connection returned yesterday, my router entered a reboot loop at the next scheduled overnight reboot.

I noticed it early this morning after it had been looping for hours. I read this thread, deleted the BW data and the problem was solved. The router clock was fine after the connection returned yesterday (ie prior to the scheduled reboot and subsequent reboot loop).

So it had nothing to do with the timezone or daylight saving time in my case but maybe it couldn't handle the discrepancy between the router time and the time stamp of the last bandwidth stats or something?

Worth mentioning that the bug is still there on 1.9.1.1.

Had to:
- disconnect modem/WAN (to stop looping)
- ssh to router
- rm -rf /usr/data/bwmon
- reboot

And that fixed the boot loop.

It happened two days after daylight savings time change.
Started looping at midnight exactly.

Also had this problem on TL-WR1043ND v1, Gargoyle 1.10.0 (ab16f958).

With 'rm -rf /usr/data/bwmon' I was able to recover. I've also added this command to '/etc/initd./done' so I don't encounter this again.
