speed issues

Post by medalto »

i upgraded my broadband speed from 10 -20 Mb/sec. but was only getting a maximum of 10 anywhere on the network.
Even when it was
cablemodem ->Gargoyle router v1.2.1, wireless disabled ->client,
all hardwired, I was getting 10.

When i replaced my WRT54-flashed router with a Belkin 7234 wired in te same way , i got 17-19.
I upgraded the WRT54G firmware to 1.2.5 and then 1.3.9
Speed when wired in the same way was 15-16.

Anything i can do about this, as I prefer to use the gargoyle router. SWMBO http://acronyms.thefreedictionary.com/SWMBO now has an interest in this so any falling away from a speed of 20 is enthousiastically reported to me , so its the Belkin at the moment

The WRT54G's are great routers, but they are maxing out with
the new speed increases available to broadband users.

I've done testing with PBIX on this.

You can completely max out the WRT54G cpu and near max out
the RAM usage, while never using the full amount of bandwidth.

Stick with the Belkin.

Depending what features you have enabled for Gargoyle,
it can take processing power usage, which will slow down
usable bandwidth - if you understand what I mean.

Whoops - I didn't read the prior post carefully!

DITTO everything PBIX said below!

I was thinking the Belkin could handle Gargoyle firmware - my bad.

Yea! Get one of the TPLink routers!

We can satisfy SWMBO and use Gargoyle.

With a WRT54GL I think you should be able to get around 30Mbps if you turn off QoS. With QoS on you should be able to get around 10Mbps. Now you did not state exactly which router (and version) you have but several of the older ones were even slower than the GL.

Of course QoS is what makes Gargoyle fun for me so turning it off steals joy and may raise the ire of SWMBO for other reasons.

Now the WRT54 series were great routers and still work great for those not as bandwidth blessed as you. But the world has moved on and you can do better.

Here what I recommend. Go to EBay and buy a $30 TP-WR741ND. It can run Gargoyle. My testing of this routers shows it can do an amazing 48Mbps with QoS on (or off).

Return or sell the Belkin.
Down with OEM firmware.
Never surrender!

I have the same sort of problem, i ugraded to this nice firmware, less complicated than luci, but my speed dropped to 7,1MB/s and if i use openwrt i get 14MB/s(120Mbit),

Is there any fix for it? i have the tplink 1043.

That's astonishing. Are there any other TP Link routers you've tested that Gargoyle works on?
