Gargoyle Bleeding edge build (Openwrt 36089 + debugfs)

Post by Slacker »

USE AT YOUR OWN RISK! This flash may cause bricks, cancer, erectile dysfunction and blindness!

Build includes debugfs, which enables the disable_ani ath9k workaround for the 1Mbit/s eth9k issue.
Includes 36052's "ath9k: add a fix to reduce the number of spurious tx hang detections "

| Gargoyle version 1.5.X | OpenWrt Attitude Adjustment branch |
| Gargoyle revision 8db2ea1 | OpenWrt revision r36089 |
| Built April 04, 2013 | Target ar71xx/debugfs_usb_large |
------------------------------------------------------------------

I've built this primarily to see if the latest ath9k fix takes care of the "clients drop to 1Mbit, wifi flaky, even on just B/G" issue I, and others, have been dealing with.

Flashed on a 1043ND 1.7 and basic functionality verified. I'm using it as we speak, but I do not use tor or Openvpn.

Funny stuff: Webmon came on by itself, but it may be because I used "preserve settings" from the 3/30 build.

I've split the flashes to save time/bandwidth:
https://www.dropbox.com/s/lmlnw9ubnw9iw ... 9461-1.zip = All images except w

https://www.dropbox.com/s/gwlcs5yhsy9mi ... 9461-2.zip = Images starting with w (Example: gargoyle_1.5.x-ar71xx-generic-wndr3700, etc)
(ignore the git number in the filename, I started this pretty early)

Atheros(Ubiquity):

To use disable_ani:

Code: Select all

echo 1 >/sys/kernel/debug/ieee80211/phy0/ath9k/disable_ani
wifi

To keep disable_ani enabled across reboots:

add to /etc/rc.local:

Code: Select all

echo 1 >/sys/kernel/debug/ieee80211/phy0/ath9k/disable_ani

My 1043ND was flashed successfully from 1.5.x from March, 31, 2013.
Very fast reboot.
Also tried restore settings from the backup of previously mentioned build - went well.
DHCP, QoS, Restrictions are working well.
There is one annoying issue with restoring settings and OpenVPN server does not start after that, although it was set up and running during backup. It is for all builds 1.5.9 and further. I do not know how it was before.
Had to delete 'ra_openvpn' section from /etc/firewall config file and set OpenVPN from scratch.
Will check the issue with accidently rebooting router like it was on previous build.

Can anyone confirm whether the bug that prevents a Gargoyle router connecting to an xBox and some HP Printers has been fixed yet in this bleeding edge release?

My router is a TP-Link 4300 and it did not work with any of the 1.5.9 releases thus far. The defect is actually an OpenWRT issue but I'm hoping that one of the Show/Tell/Contribute releases pulls in a newer OpenWRT release in that fixes the issue.

I'm on DD-WRT now that does not have the issue but want to return to Gargoyle as soon as possible.

A quick look through https://dev.openwrt.org/log/branches/at ... ollow_copy yields nothing glaring from 35631 to 36088.

I have neither, so I'm not familiar with the issue.

In other news: Gargoyle just got bumped to include 36088 by Eric, so this build can now be considered "safe".

Thanks for the info. Until the xBox/HP Wireless fix is confirmed, I'll stick with dd-wrt, it's just too hard to flash from dd-wrt to stock and then to gargoyle and back if it's not working properly. Too much playing in traffic which may result in a bricked router!

What exact issue do you have with Xbox?
My Xbox is connected via W-Fi and I had no issues with this build and the older ones, 1.5.9, 1.5.7, 1.5.6, 1.4.x.
I do not have HP printer but my Samsung 3205W is also working via Wi-Fi flawlessly.

My xBox and HP Printer would only connect on 802.11g. If you set the router up to connect to 802.11n, then it would not connect. From the looks of the wireless config file in /etc/config/wireless the OpenWRT settings included

hwmode 11ng

It does not appear that the mac80211 driver supports 11b when the 40Mhz channel width is turned on to support 300Mbps using 2.4 GHz.

Even though the xBox connects using 11g I suspect that it begins communication using 11b first before switching to 11g. If it can't connect at 11b, then it does not even try 11g and just gives up.

What I need Gargoyle to do is support mixed mode 11bgn. DD-WRT does support mixed mode and I can connect to my printer and xBox with DD-WRT just not with 1.5.9 Gargoyle, even the latest.

If you have it working, can you post the contents of /etc/config/wireless so I can see what your settings are? Perhaps it has been fixed in the latest bleeding edge release.

option macaddr '39:zy:ww:fa:os:82'
option hwmode '11ng'

First of all, good idea not to publish your mac address.

Second, see hwmode '11ng', it appears that this does NOT enable 11b so just in case you have an xBox, while it operates using 11g it is so old that it "assumes" that there are 11b routers out there and I believe it communicates using 11b and then switches to 11g. The problem with this version of Gargoyle (OpenWRT actually) is that it won't talk 11b and thus the xBox gets confused and refuses to connect. This also happens on some wireless HP printers.

I'm waiting for a confirmed fix for this before I switch back to Gargoyle.

The problem does not exist on latest release of dd-wrt.
