Curious about setting line speed on Gargoyle vs. WNDR3800

Post by Hoggy »

I'm wondering why on Gargoyle, one has to enter the upload and download speeds for QOS? I seem to remember that the OEM firmware on both the WNDR3800 & WNDR 3700v3, one doesn't have to enter the line speed. Of course, I could be remembering it wrong...

What does the OEM fW do differently so that speed doesn't have to be entered?
Netgear WNDR3800 w/Gargoyle 1.5.8 (using)
Netgear WNDR3700v3 w/Factory FW (now as backup)
Noticed wireless is stronger in WNDR3800 too.

Hard to say what the OEM firmware does since it is proprietary. And since we cannot know how it works we cannot tell the differences between it and Gargoyle.

By coincidence I got a WSNR3700 a few days ago and looked at the OEM "QoS" page out of curiosity.

While I did not test it is seems highly unlikely to me based on what I saw that you could make the OEM QoS work at all. There is simply not enough information entered into the router.

Gargoyle is open source for all to see and its QoS actually works.
