I went and ordered a WNDR3800. I seriously couldn't find any other routers locally at 'known supported' versions. Maybe I am just impatient. Anyhoo, I decided the excessive $$$ was worth it to get over my angst. BTW - The info at openwrt seems to say that this Netgear is recoverable from being brick...

The WNDR3800 is a good choice because there was only one version of it and it is well supported in OpenWrt/Gargoyle. Unfortunately, it is no longer being made, but refurbs and used ones on ebay are pretty easy to find. Not sure about them no longer being made. They are all over ebay selling as 'new...

Thanks for the help, but I am not much the wiser. I am all over eBay, but the used market in Australia is probably at least an order of magnitude smaller than the US.
