There is some problem with usb_storage plugin. Mountd eat all cpu resources and performance - transfer from usb is very poor. IMHO better use block-mount/block/hotplug in this case.

Wrong detection of partition type
About usb_plugin: don't use fdisk to identity type of partition. Use disktype. I've some pendrive with vfat's markers, but reformatting to ext2. In this case, usb-storage does not correctly detect the partition type. Disktype doing it correctly.
