You need a Serial TTL cable to recover it. It's well explained in OpenWRT Wiki.

I managed to brick mine twice too using sysupgrade file, don't know exactly why but with factory files it never happened.

Yes, it's really easy to setup with gargoyle.. I use it the same way too.

It's exactly the same thing but with Dropbear instead of SSHd

But I don't know if it's possible... Since I'm good with electronics and have the necessary equipment, I can easily upgrade RAM, eg from 32 to 64MB on some TP-Link routers.
