It's possible to flash. You just need to:
-assign a static IP in your computer
-set up a http server and put the firmware image in wwwroot directory
#router
-go to failsafe mode
-cd /tmp
-wget http://computer_ip_adress/firmware.bin
-mtd -r write firmware.bin firmware
That's it

Not yet, you have to wait some time. Or you may want to try V7 but it could brick and will require at least a serial TTL and some soldering to unbrick.

You don't need JTAG, only serial TTL(5v signal).

Actually OpenWRT support squid, but I have tried it once on a TL-WR1043nd with a 500mb cache flashdisk and browsing became slow as hell. However it works very well on Computers.
