From what I can see you don't appear to have the expected ext4 partition on /dev/sda? so it hasn't mounted anything from the USB drive as root. I have no idea about using the script directly - I would have used the web UI USB Storage page, selected the device, filled in the other details and checked...

First check how much free flash space you have - there have been reports of some 8MB flash devices not having sufficient flash space to save settings properly. Had a power outage? "read only file system" sounds like said filesystem has corruption of some sort that precludes mounting it read-write. Not unusual with unclean shutdowns.

The most recent one: openwrt-22.03.5-bcm53xx-generic-netgear_r8000-squashfs.chk If you haven't already put it back to the OEM firmware, you might consider trying the 23.05 snapshot (i.e. pre-release of 23.05, should include LuCI unlike master snapshots) from https://downloads.openwrt.org/releases/2...
