SCANNER (all in one HP) connected to Gargoyle USB... ???

Post by JosephDaemon »

Hi everyone

I'm using the lastest 1.5.4 gargoyle on TL-WR1043ND. And it's working great. Fantastic wireless! Thanks Eric and all developers. =)

I connected my HP All in One (printer + scanner) to the router's USB port and installed the drivers on the PC network clients, using the JetDirect Protocol.

The printer is working... It's printing fine.

The problem is the scanner... I don't know how to make it work on the network PCs, since the All in One is connected to the router.

I think it's a matter of sane's configuration... I followed this guide:
http://www.linuxquestions.org/linux/ans ... er_network

The client side config is ready. But I don't know how to configure the server side (GARGOYLE) to work with sane. Can you help me?

$ ssh root@192.168.1.1
$ opkg list_installed
I did not see sane...

Best Regards

You're probably not going to be successful with this.

Just the sane / xsane packages are around 3-4 mb compressed

You don't have enough space to get this installed.

The documentation link you pointed out had the scanner attached
to a PC and that PC was sharing access to other computers
through the router.

http://www.shcherbyna.com/?p=983

There is an article that highlights how it could be possible on
an Asus RT-N16, but be advised, the router has 32MB Flash/128MB Ram

Your current router is not going to run sane easily, if at all.
It has 8MB flash and 32MB ram.

If you're really going down this path, you need to get
a different router.

Thanks a lot for the explanation

Is there anyway to use the scanner (connected to this router WR1043ND), instead of through sane?

Is sane the only way? If it is... how about adding a swap partition (pendrive) to router's usb to extend memory? And maybe a ext3 (pendrive) to extend filesystem...

best regards

Even installing extra space probably won't help much. I think you
will run out of RAM. Best you can do is share the printing over USB
but I don't think you will get the device scanning successfully.

You are also going to peg the CPU whenever you do something
that intensive, possibly slowing the network to a crawl.

The WR1043ND just is not up to this type of task.

You need a bigger router like the Asus RT-N16 for what you want.

You really think that package would compile on openwrt anyways?
WRT54GL v1.1
Gargoyle 1.4.7

I just re-read the requirements.

Looks like Optware needs to be installed as well.

That'll take up most of the space as well, and I'm not sure if
Optware runs correctly with OpenWRT.

So yea, once again, highly unlikely this will work at all.

Thanks again for help, my brother.

I am thinking on installing sane to share the scanner on my WDTV (with wdlxtv firmware). Have you ever heard about it?
It's also linux based and works with optware.

But... Do you know anybody on this forum that was successful installing sane and sharing scanner through gargoyle? I mean, using a better router/hardware, off course.

Just take a look on my router's status

Device Name:Gargoyle-TL-WR1043ND
Gargoyle Version:1.5.4
Device Configuration:Gateway
Memory Usage:12.4MB / 28.8MB (43.2%)
Connections:161/4096
CPU Load Averages:0.00 / 0.00 / 0.00 (1/5/15 minutes)

I am not using any swap partition and we can see more than 50% of free memory... ;) Are you sure that this WR1043 is not able to handle sane daemon?

[ ]'s

edit: now i understood... Sane libs take about 29mb. I could extend the root filesystem to an usb pendrive... But when sane libs are loaded into router's RAM, there wont be enough space for that (wr1043nd has only 32mb RAM for everything).

Loading sane libs (~29mb) into RAM will make my router use the swap partition forever. And the swap partition on the pendrive is much slower than the RAM chip inside the router... Am i right?
