Using VPN client on laptop kills http browsing

I'm running LEDE on a WDR3600 (no wifi) bridged to an Archer C7 also running LEDE via ethernet to provide wifi signal. Using privateinternetaccess.com's linux client (v.65) on a laptop while downloading a torrent, I'm no longer able to browse the internet on the same laptop after about 5-10 minutes. The torrent will continue downloading/seeding though very slowly. If I install Gargolye 1.9.x, this problem goes away.

Is there an obvious package I can try to install when running LEDE to fix this? Or is there something in Gargoyle's default config that can translate over?

There's no real reason I can't continue running Gargolye on the WDR3600, this is mainly for shits and giggles.

I just hoped that since Gargoyle is based on OpenWRT (as is LEDE), there might be some insight in the Gargoyle forum. I asked the same question in the LEDE forum but as it's nascent, I figured I'd cover all bases.

You may be better served by using both and comparing their config files directly.
Config files will be at /etc/config

I'm not familiar enough with OpenVPN to comment on what might be the difference.

I'm not using OpenVPN, I'm just using PIA's local VPN client running on a laptop. Torrents will continue to download, but all other traffic seems to die. I'll test the client on a Mac and see if I get the same result.
