Wired computer can't get IP

Hi,
I normally connect my laptop to the router via WiFi, however tonight I needed to transfer a large amount of files, so tried to plug it in via LAN.
I had this laptop and another plugged into an 8 port 10/100 switch, uplinked to WRT54GL router. It wouldn't get an IP, and assigned its own. It also wouldn't access the internet.
I initially thought that maybe my router didn't support uplinking, and only recognize 1 computer on the switch. So then I moved my laptop straight onto the router, and still no luck.
I am unsure why this is happening, as I have a static IP setup for both WiFi and LAN connections on the same computer. I have also used the LAN port in the past with no issues.
Any ideas?
