Purchasing New AP for Gargoyle

I recently purchased a Netgear AC5300 Nighthawk X8 and loaded DD-WRT, but am having stability issues and it is surprisingly difficult to configure data usage quotas for our guest account, which led me to discover Gargoyle. Now I'm considering purchasing a different router that will support Gargoyle and returning my AC5300, but am having difficulty determining what modern router would be a good choice.

From what I can tell it's been over six months since any updates have been made to Gargoyle. Is it still under active development? If so, any guidance on what hardware would be the best choice at the moment?

Thanks!

It's been that long since the last official release, but there are kinda weekly builds available that are linked from the viewforum.php?f=14 forum.

I've got TP-LINK TL-WR1043ND and ARCHER C7 V2 routers, which are both supported along with a lot of others. If your Netgear would be supported by OpenWRT, you could try and request a Gargoyle build for it, but it seems to be a bit early for that.
