TL-WR1043N/ND v1 Dropouts

Hi folks
I have a WR1043N/ND v1 (main router) with stock firmware connected by cable to a WA901N/ND v3 running gargoyle 1.8.1 in AP mode. Then I have another WR1043N/ND v1 running gargoyle 1.8.1 in Wireless Bridge/Repeater mode (running off the WA901N/ND AP) which is connected by cable to a NAS with a static IP and occasionally serves as a AP. The problem I have (and had with stock firmware on the WA901N/ND v3 and WR1043N/ND v1 as well) is intermittently the WR1043N/ND v1 in bridge mode drops off line and is unreachable. Can't ping it (and of course) can't ping the NAS. I can resolve this by rebooting the WA901N/ND which is always reachable but obviously it's annoying. So...... what can I do to resolve it? Will gargoyle 1.9 help? Will a previous version (1.5? 1.6?) help? I think the problem is the WR1043N/ND (I've read they are somewhat unstable in the wireless department), is there another low cost router that people recommend would serve as a replacement?
