Advice for a newcomer

Hi,

I am looking for a bit of advice from the members here to get me started.
I am pretty much totally new to the finer details of networking but am reasonably tech savvy.

I am really just wanting to get some QOS so I can prioritize my online gaming to stop high pings when my partner surfs the web.

I am fairly poor at the moment but have found a TL-WR1043ND v1.x that I can buy for $30 that is new in box.

Onto the questions.

First of all is this router sufficient for my needs (2-3 pc's + 1 printer connected via wireless, basic web surfing / videos + online gaming)?
I only get about 6megs down from my ISP so not a lot of bandwidth to deal with.

Secondly, Which version should I start with considering the router will be new out of the box (The guide on this site says 1.6, is this outdated?) and if relevant which version should I upgrade to?
I really only need basic networking with a few pc's and a printer but decent QOS controls for gaming.

Thirdly, If the wifi signal is not great on the router can I use a TP Link extender TL-WA830RE (which I have currently) or will this mess with network / QOS?

Thank you in advance for any help you may be able to provide.
I believe I should be able to follow the instructions the rest of the way (Hopefully!)

Hi there :)
Welcome to the forum.

Yes the WR1043ND v1 will be ok for your setup. If you are getting that from a friend then knock $5 or 10 off that price ;)

I dont have a v1 of that router but I have my v2 stil on 1.6.2.

When you have got all set up then I don't see there being a issue with using the extender should work fine.
